You can get hurt.

The red light runner is getting all of the attention. Looks like their airbags didn’t go off. The person who was t-boned  is hiding behind the tree. They seem to be fine.

While working at Redflex I had to pull video for redlight runner accidents constantly. People want to bitch about red light cameras and “Hur dur it’s just a money scam” well after the thousandth time watching people blatantly blow through lights with no fucks given you’ll change your mind.

The red light runner’s airbags didn’t go off? Geez, I hope there was only the driver in that car , and no passengers got hurt.

It is a money scam, but it’s also something that’s potentially helpful. Ideally I’d like to see more cams (if you run a red light, you’re getting hit), lower penalties (if we can catch every run red-light, there’s no need for a high fine to create deterrence when you can’t catch everyone), but with none of the false positives (right on red is legal camera people!), and certainly none of the shortening yellow lights to make more people run the red.

Valid points. I think with the rise of dash cams we’ll see more positive who’s fault results.

S for right on red, it’s allowed, the camera knows it. They have a speed threshold so you could roll the read, illegaly without stopping and it not trigger. If you do go too fast, trigger it, oh shit there’s a car and stop after, like every read light ticket it has to get reviewed by two people AND the local Police Officer responsible for the area. They have to be confident enough to oppose you in court. Something like 60% of all redlight incidents get thrown out for one reason or another.

Yellow light shortening usually happens where they reduce it to the minimum safe allowence if it was higher before. Grimey, technically legal, but grimey.

If definitely heard of cases (in some cases, with video) where the camera messed up for turners. And the requirements for issuing tickets does vary by locality.

Yeah, the yellow light thing might be legal, but being legal and being good are definitely not completely overlapping concepts.
